You Vs. You
On self-abandonment, conscious choice, and the life we create when we finally choose ourselves.
On self-abandonment, conscious choice, and the life we create when we finally choose ourselves.
You Vs. You is something I live every day, with every decision I make.
For much of my life, choosing myself did not come naturally.
Because of the conditioning I spoke about in The Alchemist, I grew up struggling with self-esteem and a low sense of self-worth. I learned to people-please. To put other people's needs before my own. To make myself useful. To make myself smaller when necessary.
And for a while, that could look like love.
Until I needed some of that energy back.
I began recognizing a pattern in my relationships. Everything could be fine while I was pouring into someone else. But when I needed to pull that energy inward, establish a boundary, or simply put myself first, something changed.
Insecurities surfaced. Projections surfaced. Power struggles surfaced.
And resentment grew inside of me.
Not only toward other people, but toward myself.
Because somewhere underneath the anger was the knowledge that I had participated in my own abandonment.
I had made choices against myself because they were familiar.
I neglected myself. My health. My body. My needs.
I repressed anger until it became emotional intensity. I sabotaged myself. And eventually, when I could no longer tolerate a situation, I would withdraw from it completely.
I had made myself small to make someone else comfortable.
And eventually I had to ask myself:
How many times can you recognize the pattern before recognizing that you now have a choice?
THE MIRROR
Over the years, therapy and shadow work helped me trace these patterns back to their roots.
Awareness changed things.
But awareness alone did not change me.
Because eventually you reach the uncomfortable part of healing where you understand why you behave a certain way, you understand where the conditioning came from, you can recognize the pattern while it's happening...
and you still have to choose differently.
That's where You Vs. You lives.
I know that some of my own decisions brought me to where I am now.
But I also know that where I am now is forging me.
I see it as the final stretch of a pattern that has followed me through different chapters, different relationships, and different versions of myself.
The final touches.
The place where knowing better has to become choosing better.
Not because the old version of me was weak.
She survived with the tools she had.
But survival patterns cannot be allowed to design the rest of my life.
A higher version is always possible.
And now I have to choose her.
THE DESIGN
Every element of You Vs. You carries that confrontation.
The two skulls facing one another represent exactly what the name says:
You facing you.
No external enemy.
No person to defeat.
No one else to blame for what happens after awareness.
Just the version of yourself built through conditioning, survival and familiarity standing face-to-face with the version capable of choosing something different.
Behind them sits the Flower of Life, representing creation.
Because confronting yourself isn't only about destroying an old pattern.
It's about creating the life you actually want.
The composition is divided between two energetic poles.
Red on the left. Violet on the right.
The red represents the Root Chakra: survival, security, the physical world, the instinctive self.
The violet represents the Crown Chakra: consciousness, spirit, higher awareness.
Lower self and higher self.
Ego and spirit.
Not separated forever, but brought into relationship with one another.
Because self-mastery isn't about pretending the lower self doesn't exist.
It's about becoming conscious enough that it no longer gets to make every decision.
THE INTUITIVE SIDE
The skull appears again on the left sleeve.
I chose the left intentionally.
For me, it represents the feminine and intuitive side. The receptive space where insight arrives before action follows.
Because so many times, we already know.
The intuition speaks.
The body speaks.
Something inside of us recognizes when a decision is out of alignment long before we're willing to admit it consciously.
The question becomes whether we listen.
THE WASH
Even the garment itself is part of the story.
I chose a snow-washed T-shirt because I didn't want You Vs. You to look untouched.
Transformation isn't untouched.
The washed, weathered appearance represents the wear and tear of traveling through the trenches while learning to choose yourself.
You've been through something.
You've carried something.
You've survived versions of yourself that were created for environments you no longer inhabit.
The marks remain.
But so do you.
YOU VS. YOU
For me, You Vs. You is choosing alignment with my higher self after gaining wisdom through trauma, repetition, therapy, shadow work and experience.
It's choosing differently when the familiar choice would be easier.
It's choosing what I know I deserve instead of choosing what keeps someone else comfortable.
It's understanding that healing doesn't erase the person you used to be.
It gives you the awareness to decide whether that version of you should still be making your decisions.
Some days that choice is enormous.
Other days, nobody else would even notice it.
But I would.
Because ultimately, the person standing at that crossroads with me is always the same.
Me.
You Vs. You.
A HIGHER VERSION IS ALWAYS POSSIBLE.
